Building the New
Tucker-Norcross Free SDA Church Sanctuary

Norcross, Georgia

On May 28, 2005, Pastor Herbert announced to the congregation gathered for worship at Tucker-Norcross Free SDA Church that we had finally obtained funding for building our new church, as shown in the rendering above. We had waited long and worked hard to get to that point, and we had much to be thankful for.

On this page we will endeavor to keep you posted as to our progress. We hope that you will check back often to see what we have accomplished. Please also keep the work in your prayers, that it will go smoothly and according to God’s will.

The Site Before Any Work Was Done:

On June 3, 2005, work officially started with placement of the stakes for the silt fence and grading:

During the week of June 5, the silt fence was erected:

The permit sign was erected during the week of June 12:

Demolition of the stone garage to make space for the sanctuary took place during the weeks of June 19 & 26:

Due to the 4th of July holiday and a week of rain, not much was done until the week of July 17, and then the trees came down:

By the end of the week of July 24 the land was completely opened up and we could now envision a church!:

By the first week in August all the trees which were felled had been hauled away or ground up for mulch:

The last old building on the site was bulldozed after waiting for the permit to do so.

In November, the construction trailer was brought to the site and a fence erected around the front of the property. As the grading commenced it was discovered that there was a lot more organic soil on the site than was originally anticipated.

During January and February, the site crew kept digging down in an effort to find good, solid, buildable soil. Then finally, after digging down about 15 feet, they found good clay.

With good soil found, all the organic ("non buildable") soil had to be removed from the site. A whole fleet of trucks were just rolling on and off the site for days as they hauled the bad soil away. Rain comes frequently early in the year in Georgia, and for many days in January, February, and March no work was able to be done because the site became very muddy and the county did not want any mud drug out onto the paved road.

After the organic soil was hauled away, new soil had to be brought in and the site leveled off.
On April 28, 2006, this was completed.
